Millie

It surprised Millie how natural it felt to be held by Luke. His hand was pressed to her back, and she was very aware of its placement. Her fingers tingled as he gripped her hand with his other one.

He wasn’t talking to her at the moment, which she was grateful for. She wasn’t sure how she would sound if she did try to speak. There were so many emotions flowing through her, and it was best to keep them to herself.

The last thing she needed to do was freak out the already hurting sheriff.

The song ended, and Millie slowed her pace. Luke didn’t move to let her go, though. Instead, his grip on her back tightened as if he wanted to keep her close to him. Like he was having a hard time letting her go.

Millie’s heart pounded in her chest as she peeked up at him. He was staring pretty hard at something over her head, his jaw so tight that she could see his muscles clenching.

Worried she’d done something wrong, she furrowed her brow as she moved to step back. “Are you okay?” she whispered.

The next song started up. Its fast tempo rattled her body and other dancers on the floor began jumping up and down to the beat.

Millie watched as they crowded in on them. This would most likely end very badly if she and Luke didn’t get out of here soon.

But Luke seemed rooted to his spot.

“We should probably go—” she started as she turned away from him only to have red hot heat rush through her body. She yelped when she realized that a very robust man had come down on her foot.

She wiggled to free her smushed toes, tapping the man in desperation.

“Move,” Luke said, his voice low and threatening.

The man on Millie’s foot turned, his eyes wide. “Excuse me?”

“You’re on her foot,” Luke said, taking a step forward and staring the man down.

The man’s eyes widened as he glanced behind him at Millie. Her eyes were watering from the pain radiating up from her foot. His face dropped as an apology shown on his face and he lifted his foot from hers.

“I’m sorry,” he yelled over the music.

Luke just responded with a growl as he turned to Millie, obviously ignoring the man. “Are you okay?” he asked as he dipped down to study her.

The pain in her foot was dulled by the sensation of Luke towering over her. She knew she needed to answer, but wasn’t sure if she could even form the words. Instead, she just nodded.

Luke wrapped his arm around her waist and extended his other arm out to create a barrier between her and everyone else. Millie moved to walk on her foot only to have an excruciating pain rush up her leg. She yelped and folded to take the weight off of it.

But suddenly, she was airborne. She gripped onto Luke’s shoulders as he wrapped his arm under her knees and kept his other arm tightly wrapped around her back.
